Spring is just around the corner, and that means seed potato season is here at Bandon Co-op!

Whether you’re a seasoned grower, a home gardener, or planting potatoes for the very first time, we have a wide range of high-quality organic seed potatoes to help you grow a healthy and productive crop.

Why Choose Seed Potatoes?

Seed potatoes are specially grown and selected for planting. Unlike supermarket potatoes, they are certified disease-free, giving your crop the best possible start. Using certified seed potatoes helps:

          •         Improve crop health and yield

          •         Reduce the risk of disease

          •         Ensure strong, vigorous plant growth

          •         Produce better-quality potatoes at harvest

When to Plant Seed Potatoes

The ideal planting time depends on your location and the potato type:

          •         First Earlies: Late February – March

          •         Second Earlies: March – April

          •         Maincrop: April – early May

Plant when the soil is workable and frost risk is low. Protect early plantings with fleece or cloches if frost is forecast.

How to Prepare and Plant Your Seed Potatoes

1. Chitting (Optional but Recommended)

Chitting means allowing seed potatoes to sprout before planting. Place them in a cool, bright place for 2–4 weeks until short, sturdy shoots appear. This helps encourage quicker growth and earlier harvesting.

2. Planting Depth and Spacing

          •         Plant seed potatoes 10–15cm deep

          •         Space 30cm apart in rows

          •         Leave 60–75cm between rows

3. Earthing Up

As plants grow, gently mound soil around the stems. This protects developing tubers from sunlight and increases yield.

Growing Tips for a Great Harvest

          •         Choose a sunny, well-drained location

          •         Water regularly, especially during dry spells

          •         Feed with a balanced fertiliser or organic compost

          •         Watch for pests and diseases and treat early

With good care, most varieties are ready to harvest in 10–16 weeks, depending on type.
