Sometimes we just need a list of tasks to focus our mind when assessing what seasonal jobs we need to tackle in the garden.
Here are a few ideas to get you thinking:
- Plant Spring bulbs (see our bulb layering guides for lovely combinations)
- Harden your lawn for winter by applying an autumn lawn feed
- Now is a good time to start a new lawn - ask our experts for advice on this
- Don't forget to keep watering especially containers & baskets
- Add all garden waste to your compost heap but be careful not to add any diseased/pest-ridden plants
- Divide herbaceous perennials
- Cover ponds with nets before leaves start to fall
- Dig up any remaining potatoes
- Give hedges a final trim before winter
- Collect seeds from your favourite flowers and store in labelled envelopes until spring
- Pick apples and pears before the wind blows them down, and store or preserve fruit that you can’t eat straight away
- Pick Autumn berries and cover crops with bird-proof netting (for all you need to make your autumn preserves, check out our Kilner range)
- Cut off trusses of unripe outdoor tomatoes and ripen them indoors
- Watch out for pests and diseases in the greenhouse, and treat any you find immediately
- Water houseplants less frequently and move them off particularly cold windowsills at night
- Check that tree ties and plant supports are firmly in place for the winter
TOP TIP
If planting any container-grown shrubs, trees etc. ensure they are very well watered before placing in the ground. This will give them a great start.
BULB PLANTING
Easy and rewarding, bulbs are easy to grow and make great Spring displays in containers and borders.
TOP TIPS for planting bulbs :
- Remove weeds and use good quality compost
- Plant bulbs 3-4 times their own depth
- If you're not sure which way up, plant it on its side
- Dry conditions at the base of hedges can be a perfect spot for some bulbs e.g. Tulips
- Chicken wire placed over the pot or freshly dug earth can deter pests
- To force Hyacinth into flower in time for Christmas, plant by end September and keep in a cool dark room until shoots are about 2in tall
