TOP GARDENING JOBS FOR SEPTEMBER

TOP GARDENING JOBS FOR SEPTEMBER

Sometimes we just need a list of tasks to focus our mind when assessing what seasonal jobs we need to tackle in the garden.

Here are a few ideas to get you thinking:

  1. Plant Spring bulbs (see our bulb layering guides for lovely combinations)
  2. Harden your lawn for winter by applying an autumn lawn feed
  3. Now is a good time to start a new lawn - ask our experts for advice on this
  4. Don't forget to keep watering especially containers & baskets
  5. Add all garden waste to your compost heap but be careful not to add any diseased/pest-ridden plants
  6. Divide herbaceous perennials
  7. Cover ponds with nets before leaves start to fall
  8. Dig up any remaining potatoes
  9. Give hedges a final trim before winter
  10. Collect seeds from your favourite flowers and store in labelled envelopes until spring
  11. Pick apples and pears before the wind blows them down, and store or preserve fruit that you can’t eat straight away
  12. Pick Autumn berries and cover crops with bird-proof netting (for all you need to make your autumn preserves, check out our Kilner range)
  13. Cut off trusses of unripe outdoor tomatoes and ripen them indoors
  14. Watch out for pests and diseases in the greenhouse, and treat any you find immediately
  15. Water houseplants less frequently and move them off particularly cold windowsills at night
  16. Check that tree ties and plant supports are firmly in place for the winter

TOP TIP

If planting any container-grown shrubs, trees etc. ensure they are very well watered before placing in the ground. This will give them a great start.

BULB PLANTING

Easy and rewarding, bulbs are easy to grow and make great Spring displays in containers and borders.

TOP TIPS for planting bulbs :

  1. Remove weeds and use good quality compost
  2. Plant bulbs 3-4 times their own depth
  3. If you're not sure which way up, plant it on its side
  4. Dry conditions at the base of hedges can be a perfect spot for some bulbs e.g. Tulips
  5. Chicken wire placed over the pot or freshly dug earth can deter pests
  6. To force Hyacinth into flower in time for Christmas, plant by end September and keep in a cool dark room until shoots are about 2in tall
